About Cara
I have always had an illustrious passion for color, form and light; often finding myself daydreaming amongst nature in my childhood. This quickly translated into a voracious predilection for all things art. I took on drawing at a very young age which luckily was a habit that was encouraged by those around me. Throughout my primary schooling, I always had art and design classes electively added to my schedule. When high school came to an end, it was a no-brainer to pursue a degree in illustration at Savannah College of Art and Design. Following my graduation, I decided to set off to the Art Deco-laden New York City to figure out how to apply my talents and learned skills.
I found fun and colorful work in the field of packaging design fairly quickly. This allowed me to utilize creative skill, color knowledge, typography and image creation in a full-time role and it taught me a lot about seeing my design work in a 3D space. While illustration is mostly a 2D endeavor, working my skills in packaging design expanded my thinking to real space and designing for 3 dimensional objects. Packaging design also gives me an insight into the current trends in what people are gravitating towards: the colors, the themes, the textures. When you design a package, you’re not only representing the product, you are also advertising the product to a customer shopping in a store. It is imperative that you create a look that is both trendy and desirable for the relevant market for that product.
While I work in packaging design, I am still consistently drawing, painting and creating works in my free time. I find that it is vital to keep my mind and my hand active in the realm of art. Creating personal works and maintaining a state of inspiration allows me to utilize these concepts and draw upon them in the professional realm as well. Often when I get a more creative design project, I am pulling colors and themes from recent personal work.
